Diffuse agricultural pollution of groundwater: addressing impacts in Denmark and Eastern England

چکیده
Abstract Diffuse groundwater pollution by agricultural land-use practices is a major international problem. The evolution of the problem in two similar areas Northern Europe, highly dependent on for public water supply and arable agriculture economic production, reviewed over decades through reference to some exceptionally long-term monitoring data. In Denmark, greatest concern has been with excessive concentrations pesticides their metabolites but significant nitrate problems have also experienced areas. Eastern England, rising constituted greater pesticide issues had be confronted. An in-depth assessment approaches available utilities addressing provided, contrasting treatment solutions, which implications carbon footprint, controls, eliminate or reduce leaching, source catchment

Evaluation of global change impacts on diffuse pollution
In a global change context, several recent advances in the field of hydrology and biogeochemistry suggest that a move from a riparian to a river drainage basin perspective is necessary to reframe research and thus provide a more integrated scientific understanding to inform water- and land-use management and policy. We explore this assertion using the control of diffuse pollution as an exemplar.
متن کاملElectricity Prices, Groundwater and Agriculture: The Environmental and Agricultural Impacts of Electricity Subsidies in India∗
In this paper we estimate the effect of agricultural electricity subsidies in India on groundwater extraction and agricultural output. Our empirical approach exploits changes in state electricity prices over time controlling for aggregate annual shocks and fixed district unobservables. Electricity subsidies meaningfully increase groundwater extraction, where the implied extensive margin price e...
متن کاملArsenic in groundwater in eastern New England: occurrence, controls, and human health implications.
In eastern New England, high concentrations (greater than 10 microg/L) of arsenic occur in groundwater. Privately supplied drinking water from bedrock aquifers often has arsenic concentrations at levels of concern to human health, whereas drinking water from unconsolidated aquifers is least affected by arsenic contamination. Water from wells in metasedimentary bedrock units, primarily in Maine ...
متن کاملReview of attitudes and awareness in the agricultural industry to diffuse pollution issues.
The Scottish Executive considers 'Diffuse Pollution from Agricultural Enterprises' as a priority issue over the next 5-10 years and recognises the need to improve knowledge transfer, advice and training amongst farmers, crofters, contractors and advisers. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency commissioned SAC to survey advisory staff on diffuse pollution issues, mitigation measures and del...
متن کاملGroundwater Pollution Control
Groundwater is an important source of potable water because it is abundant and readily available in many locations and often requires little or no treatment. In 1995, groundwater accounted for approximately 20% of potable water use in the U.S., and approximately 50% of the U.S. population relied on groundwater for their source of drinking water. In most European countries, groundwater accounts ...
